How do I register

Step 1. Download the Application to register a domestic relationship from the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (www.bdm.vic.gov.au).

Step 2. Complete the application, ensuring you:

  • attach the appropriate proof of identity documents; and
  • include the required payment and any other supporting documentation.

Step 3. Submit the completed form, supporting documentation and relevant payment to the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (www.bdm.vic.gov.au).

How long does it take to register a relationship?

A relationship is registered 28 days after the date that a valid and complete application is lodged. Incomplete or invalid applications may take longer.

Can I revoke a registered domestic relationship?

Yes. To revoke a relationship that has already been registered, submit an Application to revoke a registered domestic relationship.

If you are making the revocation application by yourself, you will also need to complete a revocation statutory declaration and attach it to your application form.

A registered relationship cannot be revoked until 90 days after the date that a valid and complete revocation application has been lodged, unless otherwise directed by a court or tribunal.

How do I apply for a relationship or revocation certificate?

To apply for a standard relationship or revocation certificate, submit an Application for a domestic relationship certificate.

You can use a standard relationship certificate as proof of a domestic relationship for legal and other official purposes.

Commemorative relationship certificates

You can use the same application form to apply for a commemorative relationship certificate.

These certificates help preserve your special event in style. All commemorative certificates are printed on archival quality paper and fit a standard frame size of 280mm x 355mm (11" x 14").

A commemorative relationship certificate is not a recognised proof of relationship document.
